The Rector of the Crown Polytechnic, Aderemi Oke, was summoned to the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday for questioning over an unreported rape incident.

The Ekiti State Police Command questioned Oke and other top officials of the institution on why they decided to cover-up the rape of a female student which occurred earlier this year.

Although the suspected rapist, Ayo aka A.Y Bishop, also a student was expelled in March, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Victor Babayemi, said rape issues are not cases that can be settled out of court so the polytechnic has no power to just expel the student based on allegation of rape without reporting the case to the police.

“The management of the polytechnic was invited to meet with the commissioner of police. They were here on Wednesday. To cover up a rape case is a compounding-felony. You can’t settle a rape case out of court; it is not a case you can settle even at the police station. It has to be charged to court,” he said.

“The CP had spoken to them and they promised that they would do everything to stop criminal behaviour among their students. We also make it a point of duty for them to collaborate with us on how to stop criminal behaviours in the institution and report cases of crimes to the police for proper investigation.”

The Punch reports:

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, said other police officers met the management of the polytechnic and asked them why they did not report the rape of a student of the school earlier in the year.

The PPRO said a female student of the school was raped and the school management did not report the incident to the police but expelled the suspect,.

Babayemi also said Bishop was also one of the four-man gang who raped an ND I student of the polytechnic on May 5, 2013.

It will be recalled that another student of the polytechnic was gang-raped by four members of a cult group in the school on May 5.

The four suspects were said to have stormed the residence of the girl, broke her door, tied her hands and legs and took turns to rape her.

The victim was also said to have also been raped by a security official of the school who was asked to take the girl to the police station to report the rape case.
