Dame Patience and Turai land tussle – and more, in today’s news roundup with Cheta Nwanze

“The appearance of law must be upheld, especially when it’s being broken.” – Boss Tweed

Oftimes, and a lot to the chagrin of those of us who love this country, our Nigeria, appears to oscillate between developing, underdeveloped, and not even making an effort. As a frustrated observer, I have finally come to the conclusion that all of our problems, including the problem of power, including the problem of security, including the problem of plain old stupidity, can be summed up in one word: LAW.

Yes, Nigeria has laws, but are they upheld? The answer to that would appear to be no, and to my mind, that is where we run into trouble. Our people do not really fear our laws. That is the reason why someone who happens to be in power, and not by virtue of election, can seize a plot of land that “belonged” to her predecessor. Truth is that that action showed an inability to think ahead. A question that must be asked is this, “if you can go about revoking other people’s right to land simply because you are in power (not office), then what happens when you are out of power?

Thankfully, our judiciary appears to be finding its feet, and yesterday, current First Lady, Dame Patience lost out to her predecessor, Hajia Turai, in the land spat that they have been involved in for a few months now.

For Nigeria to move forward, the judiciary needs to update itself, stand on its feet, and kick out nitwits in its midst. Nitwits such as those who filed the case against the Leadership journos in the wrong court. For two long, we have had a lot of issues where cases are thrown out simply because someone messed up some paperwork. That has to stop. I’m not sure that notoriety loving Wig Femi Falana has in his illustrious legal practice had an easier case to handle, ever.

P.S: A little birdie tells me that Tony Amokeodo and Chibuzo Ukaibe, both of Leadership Newspapers are still at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad detention facility in Abuja. Held incommunicado since the 19th of April.

Bits and bobs

#BokoHaram are back on the offensive. They took out communication masts in Borno yesterday.

Despite the availability of “good hospitals” in Imo, none was good enough for the Owelle. Dr. Joe Obi-Njoku, the Imo Health Suit tried to explain, Owelle needed a second opinion after being treated here first. Ah, so we have “good hospitals” ut don’t have “good doctors” eh? Shoot. They are almost always on strike…

Dame Patience’s partner in disappearing to foreign hospitals has had to dismiss rumours that he kicked a bucket.

Finally, if you cannot afford a car or taxi, leave Abuja. Mini-buses will be banned in the city from next month, and one can only assume that the “licensed high capacity buses” will go the way of the “palliatives” from last year.

Does anyone else notice anything strange about the satellite images purportedly of Baga? How many villages do you know that have a grid-like road pattern? Seems a little too well laid out given my experience with villages in the North of Nigeria. #justsaying.

Thanks for taking me to that interview by your parrot friend. Like he prophesied, opposition ‘may’ die because the reason for opposing has not been made clear. On the jail term, you are not wrong. Its 45yrs imprisonment. Concurrently or not, its not your business to make it clearer to people who know the truth and still want to make noise.

You are still not making enough noise on the tinted permit and the new money minting machine for policemen……this champagne club aint funny.

Chxta replies,

Tinted windscreens and NPF. The opportunity cost of being a big boy…
