NEMA cautions beach goers about impending ocean surge

Lagosians have been warned to be careful at beaches because of an impending ocean surge.

The warning was contained in a statement by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Wednesday, June 17.

Lagos state is not new to ocean surges. Victoria Island has been affected by surges from Bar Beach and Kuramo Beach.

NEMA urged all beach goers in the state and boat operators to cautious.

The statement, which was issued by southwest spokesperson for NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, reads in part: “NEMA is advising all users of inland waterways and fun seekers on the beaches and coastal lines to exercise utmost cautions in the face of turbulent nature of the sea.

“NEMA and other stakeholders have alerted ferry/boats operators on the situations and they are already applying safety measures as dynamic as the situations in case of emergency.”

Earlier this month, the Lagos state government alerted residents, especially those residing in flood-prone areas to relocate immediately as the water table had risen due to the high rainfall.
