A melee of sorts broke out during the National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday, February 12, when disgruntled elements hijacked and destroyed ballot boxes that were used for the voting process.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, while the incoming leaders were being voted for, some of the contestants and their supporters got agitated, became violent and smashed the ballot boxes, even as votes were being cast.

While all these ensued, some delegates reportedly fled from the venue, the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Later on, the police arrived the scene and took over the venue, and dispersed the remaining delegates.

Meanwhile, the Labour leaders are said to have now reassembled at the NLC headquarters in the Central Business District of Abuja for a 1 p.m meeting, to settle the altercation.

The trio vying to replace Abdulwaheed Omar at the helm of the union are; General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Joe Ajaero; the National President of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Igwe Achese; and National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria Ayuba Wabba.
