Democracy-Day-2012….Our own job in this arrangement, is to make sure that the government do their jobs, which is why we must be vigilant

Yesterday was democracy day, 14 years of sticking to “government by the people”. Has it worked for Nigeria? Is Nigeria now indivisible as our Prez and lead Gavel would have us believe?
Away from all the backslapping, for a lot of people, we have never had it so bad, what with news of events such as the #SoE, not a few have looked back at the military era with rose tinted spectacles. However, there are certain things that we must look at, one of which is that our greatest period of growth ever, came under this “democracy”. Heck, the chap who presided over Nigeria’s best ever spurts of growth even admitted that GDP is not a good indicator of development. I agree with him, and while I freely admit that growth does not always translate to development, it is a start, and it is up to us as a people to make the translation.

However, we must also accept that as a people, there is not much we can do as a body, which is why we need a government. Our own job in this arrangement, is to make sure that the government do their jobs, which is why we must be vigilant, and, err, pay our taxes.

Bits and bobs

Militants are usually about the most vigilant lot in these parts, but this set somehow allowed their cash to pile up since 2010. Now they have given a fortnight for it to be paid up.

While no arrest has been made over the deaths of 100 security personnel in Nasarawa, the SSS chap in charge has been shuffled out of his duty post.

Meanwhile still on the case of 35-guys-in-a-room-who-can’t-count being rigged out of their genuine choice, well, for those of you who are interested, here are the proceedings.

It would appear that train drivers in Lagos are on the same stuff that the 35-guys-in-a-room-who-can’t-count were on. Scratch that. The NRC are on it for not fixing the lines, the drivers are on it for agreeing to drive on such lines.

In other news, Nigeria is not the only one with embarrassing politicians.
