Desperado: ‘I stole ‘okada’ for my wedding,’ man tells court

Umar Bello, 28, has been sentenced to three months imprisonment for theft and criminal breach.

The accused was arraigned before a Minna Magistrate’s Court today.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Suleiman Mohammed, told the court that  the accused, a resident of Kuta Road, Minna, stole one Gambo Maliki’s motorcycle valued at N110, 000 at Tunga Goro and arrested the police.

Mohammed said the accused however escaped from police custody after his initial arrest before he was re-arrested.

When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The convict told the court that he stole the black Jincheng motorcycle to fast track his wedding plans.

In her ruling, Magistrate Hafsat Abdullahi, ordered the accused to pay a fine of N10,000 for the first charge or serve a three-month prison term in the event of a default. She also ordered him to pay N5,000 for the second charge or serve three months imprisonment in the event of a default, which is to run concurrently with the first sentence.
