You dey owe; we no dey owe – PDP and APC in Ekiti trade accusations

by Godwin Akanfe

The Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted the state government over the alleged non-payment of the July salary of local Government workers and teachers in the state, saying it is wicked to deny workers their wages.

Party spokesman, Kola Oluwawole said the party noted that the action by Governor Kayode Fayemi-led administration had vindicated its stance that the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration lacked human feelings.

Oluwawole said the delay in the payment of the workers’ salaries was a deliberate action aimed at punishing the workers for not voting for Fayemi in the June 21 governorship election.

“Our candidate, His Excellency, Dr. Ayo Fayose, defeated Fayemi squarely in the election by winning in all the 16 Local Governments and all segments of the society, including civil servants rejected Fayemi and the APC at the poll.

“Fayemi has decided to punish those he perceived did not vote for him in the election, among whom were Local Government workers and teachers. Fayemi should let the people of the state know what is delaying the payment of the salaries of these people.

“He had money to pay his political appointees and even sent money to his illegally-created local council development areas.

Fayemi should pay these workers without further delay,” Oluwawole said.

Oluwawole stressed that it was obvious that Fayemi was on vengeance mission by his silence on the unpaid workers’ salaries since July, saying the outgoing governor did not only keep the workers in abeyance, but was said to have even boasted that he would ‘show them pepper’ before he leaves in October.

“This governor should explain to Ekiti people what he is doing with the allocations that have come to Ekiti State from the Federal Government since June for them to know why the payment of workers salaries has become a taboo to the government that claims to be people friendly,” he added.

He, however, enjoined the state public servants not to lose hope, but rather keep hope alive in a better government that would erase their sufferings.

Fayemi’s camp reacts

However, a member of the Fayemi administration, who did not want to me named reacted to the accusation by claiming that the governors office had paid staff for the month of July.

According to him, the only challenge currently being faced was that not everybody received payment at the same time, either now or in the past. He clarified that the Executives and Civil servants get paid first followed by teachers and local government workers.

“It is only a false allegation,” he said, before adding, “it is also rumoured that the challenge with payment subsequently might come up from the fact that Fayemi pays salary early due to the borrowing style he uses while he awaits FAC (federal allocation) from the seat of power. But as he exits, it might be very difficult to do the same since Fayose might not want to clear the debt when he is out of office.”

Efforts to speak with authorised representatives of local council workers and the teachers’ union in Ekiti had not been successful as of the time of filing this report.
