#DivorceDrama: “42 years of fighting, and we have no child” – Retired policeman wants out of marriage

by Isi Esene

A 64-year-old retired police officer yesterday pleaded before an Ikorodu Customary Court to dissolve his marriage of 42 years giving several reasons for his decision.

The man, Simeon Eguavon, told the court that he is seeking divorce from his wife, Grace, because she has refused to respect him and she is also fond of fighting. He said they have been fighting since they got married.

The former policeman also told the court that the marriage has produced no off-springs prompting him to nurse the intention of getting another wife to bear him children.

According to Simeon: “She was 16 years old when I got married to her; since then, we have always been fighting and she does not even have any respect for me, till now.

“Infact, her father took her away for one year after we got married, to enable her to know what it entails to be a married woman.

“We have had no issue in this marriage and I now want to marry another woman, to enable me to have my own child. I am fed up; I do not love her anymore,” he told the court.

The defendant did not object to her husband’s plea, she accused her husband of infidelity saying the reason he is seeking a divorce is because he has found another woman.

Grace reportedly said, “We have not been living together since 1984; I live in one of his houses in Sango-Ota, in Ogun.

“My husband has been flirting with different women and if he has not found another woman, he would not pray for divorce. Please grant him his divorce wish,” she said.

The Court President, Risikat Ekerin, adjourned the case till October 25 for judgement.
