#DivorceDrama: ‘He strangled my neck till I started bleeding’ – Wife pleads with court for a divorce

A 38-year-old petty trader, Oluwakemi Akinwunmi, has pleaded with the Agege Customary Court to end her union of 16 years with her husband, Babatunde.

The marriage, according to her, produced four children; only two are alive and they are staying with her.

She said she wanted to leave her husband because he was too hostile and callous.

She said once when she was four months pregnant, her husband beat her till she was unconscious. She said as a result, she passed out for three days.

She told the court that Babatunde’s callousness caused the death of her first baby.

She said, “Babatunde once beat me up in public. He tore my clothes into shreds in the presence of people. There was a time we were having an argument, he strangled my neck till I started bleeding from my mouth and nose.”

Oluwakemi said there was a time he came after her during a church vigil and reached for her neck with both hands.

She pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage and grant her the custody of her remaining two children.

Babatunde was not present in court to defend himself.

The court president, Emmanuel Shokunle, adjourned the case till Dec. 5, 2012.
