Don’t sweat it: Bayelsa denies rumours of Ebola in town

by Isi Esene

The Bayelsa health commissioner, Dr. Ayebatonye Owei, has dispelled rumours of an Ebola virus case in the state.

Reacting to insinuations that three Ebola cases were recorded over the weekend at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, one of the isolation centres in the state, Owei said those were merely rumours.

Owei, however, maintained that “there is no Ebola case in Bayelsa” and described the speculations as “false”.

The state government had on Friday urged the people of the state not to panic as proactive measures had been put in place to check the spread of the disease which has killed over one thousand people in West Africa.

A case of Ebola virus was recorded in neighbouring Port Harcourt, Rivers state, sending shivers through Bayelsa.
