A Nigerian man was arrested with 2kg of heroin on Wednesday, 17 September in Naxxar, a village in the central north of Malta.

The 35-year-old suspect, Kayode Kola Orunleye, was apprehended by Malta’s Police drugs squad, who found 700 gm of heroin in a bag found in his possession.

Subsequently, his apartment was searched and an additional 1.3 kg of heroin was found during the search.

He was arraigned in a court on Thursday, 18 September, where he pleaded not-guilty to drug trafficking.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Nikolai Sant was the prosecuting counsel in the case of drug trafficking. The suspect was however, denied bail by the presiding Magistrate Neville Camilleri.

Orunleye could get a lenghty sentence if found guilty. In 2013, a 36-year-old Nigerian man, Onyemachi Nnaka, was handed an 11-year jail term in Malta over drug-related offences.

The Chapter 101 of Maltese law treats all illegal drugs as the same, with penalties for trafficking any illegal drug ranging between four years and a life sentence and a fine between €2,329.37 and €116,468.67

Penalties for possession are between 12 months to ten years imprisonment and €465.87 and €23,293.73 in fines.
