Soccer fans of the Dutch club FC Den Bosch were verbally abusing American striker Jozy Altidore with monkey chants during a match on Tuesday, but that didn’t distract him from scoring a goal for his team.
Announcements were made over the loudspeaker warning fans that the game might be canceled if they continued making racist chants, but that was no help.
The director of Den Bosch told Oracolo, “I’m deeply hurt by these people. I’m ashamed of what just happened. I have no words for it.”
Black soccer players in Europe are barraged with these sorts of insults on a regular basis. Techyville recently reported on an incident which prompted the entire AC Milan soccer team to storm off the field:
In Italy, however, AC Milan players walked off the field when racist fans began chanting, thus abandoning an exhibition match in the first half with lower division club Pro Patria on Thursday.
The chants which prompted the team to walk off the field were all directed at black players, and they were continued even after the announcer urged the racist fans to stop.
Having had enough, Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng picked up the ball and kicked it at a section of the crowd in the 26th minute of the first half. Then Boateng walked off the field with his fellow teammates.
Altidore took a very different approach than Kevin-Prince Boatena and his teammates. Instead of walking off the field, he scored a goal. It may not have shut up the racist fans, but it almost certainly showed them that he wouldn’t be distracted by their antics.
