ECOWAS seeks solution to election crisis in Gambia

West African leaders on Saturday called for a solution to the election dispute in Gambia where incumbent President has said he won’t relinquish power despite losing at the recent Presidential election.

This was discussed at the 50th summit of the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja on Saturday , attended by 11 heads of state.

Jammeh has called for a fresh election, a week after conceding defeat to winner Adama Barrow.

ECOWAS chairperson, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf said measures to solve the issue has to be recommended at the gathering.

“It is now important that the Authority, at this summit, considers recommended measures to bring this matter to successful conclusion before January 19, the constituted date when the mandate of the incumbent president expires,” Sirleaf told the summit.

UN top envoy for West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas said the crisis in Gambia was worrisome.

“The UN remains concerned by some of the worrisome developments that occurred during the post election period in The Gambia,” Chambas said

Some African leaders had earlier this week visited Gambia with the aim of reaching a resolution.
