Nasir El-Rufai declares his assets (UPDATED)

For a minute we didn’t believe the trending news that Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai allegedly declared his asset as N90 billion and 40 mansions.

Governor Nasir ElRufai of Kaduna State is always a pacesetter. He has declared his assets and he is reportedly worth N90 billion.

His assets declaration came as a big shock to most Kaduna residents on Wednesday as he allegedly declared ownership of 40 mansions, mostly in Abuja.

The Union revealed that Kaduna State Director Code of Conduct Bureau, George David declined to comment when contacted.

He said the law on asset declaration permitted public office holders not to make their asset declaration public. He however said that asset declaration by El- Rufai and his deputy were made long before yesterday.

He stated that any further information concerning the amount and assets involved in the declaration form, could only be inquired from the Abuja headquarters of the Bureau.

El-Rufai’s Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, confirmed that the governor had declared his assets but promised to get back to journalists with details.

UPDATE:  Reacting to the alleged asset declaration, El-Rufai has stated that the allegation is false.

The story which appeared on Wednesday on The Union newspaper according to El-Rufai is blatant falsehood practiced by the newspaper.

In a statement by the special assistant, media, Samuel Aruwan, he said he has directed his legal tam to enforce his rights to protect his reputation from the vandalism of irresponsible hacks.

The Union chose to write a spurious story alleging N90b as his assets declaration without seeing the declaration made by Malam El Rufai. The circle of blackmail that did the story claimed they heard a rumor, and they pursued the rumor so vigorously they transformed it into news.

When some of their cohorts made contact with the governor’s media team insisting that they respond to rumour, they were told that it is better if they chose the more legitimate route of agitating for a public asset declaration.

Fair minded people who read the story will notice that it is not grounded in any evidence. It is just the animus of blackmailers who regard Malam Nasir El-Rufai as easy prey. But since his reputation is not based on purchased kudos, he cannot be compelled into accommodation with venal people masquerading as journalists.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai is a privileged Nigerian. He qualified as a chartered Quantity Surveyor early in life and became a dollar millionaire in his twenties. He is a respected leader in in his professional field but as successful as he has been in his career, he certainly has neither N90 billion nor 40 mansions.

He will not be distracted from his total focus on making Kaduna great again. In this endeavour, he will continue to be accessible to practitioners of responsible journalism.

Also El-Rufai’s son Bello El-Rufai reacted to the allegation stating that if the news were true he should be one of the big boy in town. He took to his twitter handle to share his thought. See the embedded tweet below;

  1. Quite much! He should strive to give back to the society that created an enabling enviroment for him to own so much!

  2. This is Nigeria for you. No public officer has ever admitted corruption. Everyone is a saint. And yet our country is in this mess. Virtually all the people who have held office in this country has pilfered with the treasury for personal gains. Nigerians have only one choice: that’s to confiscate THEIR properties from looters.
