Elite Guards form human shield around Pres. Jonathan as soldier fumbles with gun

by James Sambo

On Thursday, January 15, during the wreath laying ceremony for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, a member of the elite Guards Brigade caused a minor scare.

The soldier, who was one of the two columns in the firing party for the event, had some problems with his gun, and consequently, was seen fumbling with the weapon, which apparently, got stuck in the back of his belt.

While this ensued, the nozzle of the gun lowered, which immediately prompted two members of the Presidential Guard, to quickly form a human shield around the President, ready to take a bullet for him, just in case.

Apparently, they were unsure of the motives of the guard, so they sought to err on the side of caution by protecting the president.

Another officer, who is said to be a member of the Presidential Guard, quickly pulled the soldier out of the column.

After the soldier explained his problem to him, the officer assisted him to release the rope attached to the butt of the gun from his uniform.

However, the President was reportedly unperturbed by the incident.

After the drama was over, Jonathan freed the traditional white pigeons from a huge cage at the cenotaph. He would later signed the 2015 Register for the celebrations.

In the case of any ulterior motive, the bullets used for the traditional military ceremony are said to be blanks, and they lack the capacity to inflict injuries.
