Here are the biggest stories from the entertainment scene last weekend and others that unraveled while you slept – and are buzzing this morning.
An event-packed weekend for Nigerian music artistes
The 2016 MTV MAMA, One Africa Music Fest and last night’s 3 Thrones, last weekend was a gig for every artiste who is still relevant in the Nigerian music scene. While some were piling up awards in Johannesburg, others were standing up for #BlackLivesMatter in Houston.
Saturday night, the biggest MTV MAMA awards held in South Africa simultaneously with what has come to be the most important stage for Nigerian artistes to showcase their music in the US, the One Africa Music Fest in Houston. Each show held its own and both ended up as big successes.
At the MAMAs, Wizkid was the biggest winner of the night clinching the highly coveted Artiste of the Year award as well as Best Male and Best Collaboration for Soweto Baby with South Africa’s DJ Buckz and DJ Maphorisa.
Also on the list of winners are Kenyan Afro-pop band, Sauti Sol for Best Group (their second award in that category in one week), Yemi Alade for Best Female, Emtee for Best Hip Hop, Cassper Nyovest for Best Live Act and Tekno for Best Breakthrough Act. See full list here.
Meanwhile over in Houston, 2Baba Psquare, D’banj, Olamide, Flavour, Kcee, Tekno, Cabo Snoop and every other artiste on the line-up all delivered stellar performances to the exhilarated crowd. The most outstanding being Vector’s performance dedicated to #BlackLivesMatter.
Finally Sunday night saw the 3thrones concert headlined by Davido, Tiwa Savage and Phyno held at the Eko Hotel and Suites. Though the concept behind the show got the audience a bit confused, all the artistes brought their A-game and it was well attended.
Olamide gets his first tattoo and it’s for the Yoruba race
While in the United States for the One Africa Music Fest, Olamide took his boldest fashion step yet after going blonde last month.
The YBNL artiste got a large tattoo of Oduduwa, the ancient Yoruba god and ancestor of the Yoruba race who has been described as “the essence of reality”. Olamide seems to be in tune with his roots as he showed off the art on his Instagram withe caption: #MyCulture #Yoruba #Orisha #Odudua #Oodua #Staywoke #SelfAwareness
This new adornment on his left leg has caused division among Olamide’s fans as some have approved of it and others have condemned him for “spoiling his skin”.
DJ Khaled snapchats his son’s delivery
It’s no longer news that DJ Khaled is the King of Snapchat and the keys to success and knowledge nuggets that he shares ephemeral messaging platform have gained worldwide popularity.
Well, he took the experience to a new level when he recorded the delivery of his son by his longtime fiance, Nicole Tuck.
While the doctors did their work, DJ Khaled blasted his songs, I Got the Keys and Major Key and recorded various snaps while the rest of us watched in amazement.
Congratulations to the couple.
Kanye West will not attend the 2017 Grammys if Frank Ocean is not nominated
Yes, that’s exactly what he said! The very opinionated and vocal rapper has made it clear that he will not show up at the Grammys if Frank Ocean is not nominated in any categories.
Kanye told fans, “The album I listened to the most this year is Frank Ocean’s album…as artists, we gotta come together to fight this bullshit they been throwing us with”.
This comes on the heels of the news that Ocean’s new album, Blonde and visual album, Endless will not be included on the list of nominees set to be released on December 8.
According to Billboard, though both albums were released before submission cutoff date, they were not submitted. Sources say Frank Ocean purposely withheld his album from Grammy consideration.
The Grammys will be holding on 12 February 2017 at the Staples Center, Los Angeles and we hope to not see Kanye at the event
