Herdsmen attack: Police arrest 20-year-old mastermind in Enugu

The suspected mastermind of the recent attack by herdsmen on Ndiagu Attakwu Akegbe Ugwu community in Nkanu West Local Government Area in Enugu state has been arrested by the state’s police command, the Vanguard reports.

In a statement issued on Friday in Enugu by the command’s spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, the suspect is 20-year-old Umaru Isah from Gusau, capital of Zamfara.

The police spokesman said that the arrest of the suspect followed intelligence made available to the command.

“The Enugu State Police Command in its resolve to unmask the perpetrators of the attack on Ndiagu Attakwu Akegbe Ugwu has nabbed one Umaru Isah over his alleged involvement in the incident.

“The suspect, who claimed to be 20 years of age, said he came to Enugu from Gusau in Zamfara State to rear cattle, but has none to rear till now.

“Investigations are still on with a view to unmasking his gang,” he said.

Amaraizu said that all those who perpetrated the crime would be brought to book as the police will leave no stone unturned in fishing them out.

In the early hours of Thursday, a Catholic Seminarian, identified as Mr. Lazarus Nwankwo, was killed when suspected herdsmen attacked the community.

The attackers also left varying degrees of machete cuts on four other victims, including a pregnant woman.

Four months ago, suspected herdsmen invaded and killed 11 people and injured many others in Nimbo community in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of the state.
