Excessive: Police unload 137 bullets into an unarmed couple

Members of the community in Cleveland are outraged after a shooting took place between East Cleveland Police and an unarmed couple.   No less than 13 police officers shot 137 bullets into a car after a high speed chase, killing a man and woman.  Police may have had reason to believe that the couple was armed, but they were not.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been assigned to investigate the shooting in order to determine what happened.  But the community is looking for answers.   Officers say that they heard a gunshot outside their station, which led to the chase.

The two killed were 43-year old Timothy Russell and 30-year old Malissa Williams.   A total of 60 people came together to protest the shooting, referring to the incident as a “lynching.”  The chase went through several communities before ending with gun fire, and the local police are having trouble coming up with answers.

In addition to there being no gun on the scene, there were no shell casings to indicate that the two were firing anything at anyone.

Mayor Frank Jackson said that he is conducting a thorough investigation of the matter. He said that he would support the officers, but only if they were inside “the box.”  By “the box,” he was referring to the rules and regulations of police work.

“But if they go outside of the box, there will be consequences,” Jackson said in a news conference.

Adding to the racial tensions on the matter, 12 out of the 13 officers who did the shooting were white, and one was Hispanic.
