Eye on Ambode: Governor increases death insurance benefit of police officers who die in service to N10m, more

On this week’s edition of Eye on Ambode, we bring to you a recap of the activities of the Lagos state governor this past week.

Recall that three weeks ago in South Africa, the Lagos state Rapid Response Squad (RRS) was awarded the best anti-crime police squad in West Africa by Security Watch Africa (SWA). At the award presentation event, RRS Commander, Olatunji Disu also won the most outstanding police operational officer in Africa award.

Both awards were presented to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Lagos House on Monday, where he congratulated the RRS commander and his men on the achievement and their efforts towards combating crime in the state.

It was this meeting that the governor announced that the death insurance benefit for police officers who die in active service to the state has been increased to N10 million for senior officers. Junior officers were not left out too as they also get an increment.

He also emphasized the state’s commitment to the safety and security of citizens as he crowned the day by presenting 45 power bikes and 3 patrol vehicles to the squad. He enjoined them to work hard towards making the yuletide season safe for Lagosians.pix-4051

On Thursday, the new United States ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stuart Symington paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ambode at the Lagos House. The governor congratulated the US envoy on his posting to Nigeria and expressed the readiness of his administration to partner with the United States in improving the transportation, health and other sectors of the state’s economy.

The governor also said, “Lagos is a beautiful home to American Embassy. We known that a lot of Americans reside in Lagos and we have tried as much as possible to create an enabling environment for investors in the State and also protect all citizens and residents”.pix-0294

In unrelated matters, the state government has announced that this year’s One Lagos Fiesta will be holding for eight days starting 24th December.one

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde made this known while addressing journalists on Thursday. He said that the annual festival will hold in its usual five locations including Ikeja (Agege Stadium), Badagry (Badagry Stadium), Ikorodu (Ikorodu Town Hall), Lagos Island (Bar Beach) and Epe (Epe Recreation Centre).

He also introduced a new feature to the festival, Lagos Got Talent which “seeks to discover, celebrate and reward exceptional talents among the youth or the young at heart in the areas of music, dance, comedy and other creative stunts“.

Meanwhile, there is an ongoing road expansion project at the Berger axis towards Omole and Olowoora. This is the completion of the project that brought about the pedestrian bridge in Berger that has aided free movement towards the Lagos Ibadan expressway. Lay by, segregated lanes, iron barricades and bridge expansion are part of the project.
