Eye on Buhari: The President of Nigeria takes UN General Assembly in New York

President Muhammadu Buhari spent the entire week at the UN General Assembly in New York and according to him, it was quite successful.

Here are the activities the President has been up to this past week.

September 19

While President Muhammadu Buhari went off for the treatment of his ear infection, there was a debacle back home as to how much he actually spent during the treatment. The Senior Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu on Sunday via his Facebook page refuted claims by Prof. Farooq Kperogi that the President spent less than £50,000 (N20.5m) on the treatment of an ear infection in the UK.

Prof. Kperogi had alleged that the President spent £6m during his treatment in June.

Paying no mind, President Buhari focused more on brighter things as he congratulated Nigeria’s team effort at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, saying the team had an outstanding performance at the games in Brazil.

Later in the day, Buhari assured Nigerians that suicide bombing is now becoming a thing of the past in the country. Buhari made the disclosure on Monday while speaking at a bilateral meeting with President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, in New York, on the sidelines of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

President Buhari submitted nominees for Nigerian Communication Commission (NRC) and Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Senate.

The Senate President Bukola Saraki on Tuesday read two correspondences from the President for the confirmation of the appointment.

September 21, 2016

President Muhammadu Buhari assured U.S. President, Barack Obama, that his administration will take necessary steps to resolve the crisis in the Niger Delta. Buhari made the assurance during a meeting with Obama at the United Nations General Assembly.

Muhammadu Buhari then spoke extensively about making ‘Africa Rising’ a reality in Nigeria.

Buhari later addressed the U.S./Africa business forum at the 71st general assembly of the United Nations while claiming Nigeria is on its way to a technology revolution.

President Buhari told his Swiss counterpart, Johann Schneider-Ammann to release the country’s funds which were stashed away in the European country.

The President later invited the United Nations to serve as an intermediary during the negotiations for the release of the abducted Chibok girls.

September 23, 2016

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said the current economic challenge the country is facing is due to the failure of past administrations to save for the rainy day. He made the remark in New York when he hosted Nigerian professionals based in the U.S.

Later in the day, Buhari gave his approval for the programme of events lined up for the commemoration of Nigeria’s 56th independence anniversary.
