Family affair! Chief Judge of Lagos hands-over to younger sibling (READ)

by Jewel Stephen

For the first time in the history of Nigeria, a female state chief judge hands over to a sibling.

The daughters of Justice James Williams, recorded the feat on Wednesday, 20 August, when Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, swore in Justice Funmilayo Atilade as the new chief judge of the state, taking over from elder sister, Justice Ayotunde Philips.

The swearing-in and handing-over event was held at the Adeyemi Bero Hall of the state Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja. The outgoing Chief Judge had attained the compulsory retirement age of 65, which necessitated the swearing-in of her sister as the fifth female chief judge of the state.

Atilade described herself as “a child of destiny” in her acceptance speech, while promising to give her best.
