As Nigerian troops engaged the Boko Haram militants in a firefight in Konduga, about 35 kilometres from Maiduguri, on Friday, 13 September, a hashtag, #VictoryforNigeria was created on Twitter by the Defence headquarters.
According to the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen Chris Olukolade, the purpose of the hashtag was for Nigerians to send in Tweets of support for the troops that were in battle with the insurgents.
The hashtag seemed to be going well, and even trending on Twitter, until a user with the handle @malamjibo began tweeting personal messages at Olukolade, which the defence boss did not take too kindly to.
Olukolade tweeted with his handle, @GENOlukolade, “We are compiling some remarkable posts from y’all, its hard selecting but we’ve got to make it a handy book for our Men #VictoryforNigeria”.
The aggressor, @malamjibo replied, “another money making venture in the name of fighting insurgency”, and a couple of other tweets, which got the Defence spokesman enraged and tweeted back at him saying, “Be warned. Am i your father’s mate.”
