Fear of Ebola: Squash championship suspended in Nigeria

by Olorunwa Lawal

The Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in some parts of the country, has prompted the Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF) to call-off the African Senior Squash Championship billed for next month.

The Secretary-General of the federation, Udokang Etim, who made this known on Monday said that the suspension was necessary so as to allow the Ebola scare be at its barest minimum before hosting any competition.

“We have decided to suspend the hosting of the African Senior Squash tournament. This is because of the current Ebola outbreak on the continent.

“We want the people to be safe and we need to protect our own people too. That’s why we are suspending it till further notice,” Etim said.

Nigeria was scheduled to host the tournament from October 3rd to 9th.

Last month, Nigerian athletes withdrew from the Youth Olympic Games held in China. This was attributed to the inhumane treatment received from Chinese Authorities who had them quarantined, Isolated, and barred from public training with the other athletes.
