How Buhari, Tinubu pressured Dogara to make Gbajabiamila House Leader

Before yesterday, even the most accurate political pundit could not really predict what the outcome of the resumption of the Federal House of Representatives, would have brought on Tuesday, July 28.

However, against all odds and after over a month of an impasse, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, bowed to pressure and respected the wishes of the All Progressives Congress to name Femi Gbajabiamila House Majority Leader.

Consequently, Dogara’s action signaled the end of the lingering crisis that has bedeviled the lower chamber of the National Assembly since its inauguration last June.

It is believed that President Muhammadu Buhari played a major role in ending the crisis after calling Dogara following a last-minute meeting with party leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Before Tuesday’s meeting, lawmakers loyal to the Speaker had insisted on disregarding the party’s position.

The pro-Dogara group had gone into Tuesday’s session with the upper hand over Gbajabiamila’s camp, following defections from the group of the latter to the former.

Even at the end of a caucus meeting that ended around 12.30 a.m on Tuesday, they had resolved to push ahead with their choice of Ado Doguwa (Kano) for House Leader, Bala Jibrin (Kogi) for Deputy Leader, Pally Iriase (Edo) for Chief Whip and Chike Okafor (Imo) for Deputy Leader.

However, midway into Tuesday’s session, Vanguard reports that pressure from the Presidency compelled Dogara to do the ruling party’s bidding.

As the session ensued, Dogara who was presiding over the affairs of the House stepped down for his deputy, Rep. Yusuf Lasun to take over deliberations while he had a private discussion with Gbajabiamila and Doguwa in the office of the House Clerk.

After they emerged from the hour-long deliberations, the Clerk returned to the chair and announced the composition of principal officers of the ruling APC.

And the rest like they say, is history.

That was how a semblance of sanity was restored to the Federal House of Representatives.
