Some offices of the Nigeria Football Federation offices in Wuse Zone 7, Abuja went up in flames this morning. This fire incident comes against the backdrop of the current leadership tussle within the football body, and as the embattled Aminu Maigari-led board is trying to return to work.

Although, the cause of the fire cannot be immediately ascertained, the spokesperson of the football federation, Ademola Olajire, confirmed the incident to journalists. Another source said that the fire first started through an electrical fault in the Chief Accountants office but soon spread to the General Secretary’s office.

Sources say that that the fire started on the morning of Wednesday, 20 August, from the third floor of the building, where the office of the Chairman of the Federation, Aminu Maigari, is situated. Aminu Maigari, just returned to office on Monday after being impeached by the NFF Executive Committee before being reinstated by FIFA to oversee the NFF General Elections earlier scheduled for the end of August.

This latest set back will be one in a long line of dramatic events unfolding in Nigerian football since the end of the 2014 which was hosted by Brazil. NFF vice president, Mike Umeh, who has distanced himself from the reinstated Aminu Maigari board insists that Maigari was legally impeached and therefore has no legal basis to parade himself as the de facto head of the Federation.

Fire service officials have reportedly arrived the scene and have begun making efforts to quell the fire.
