Fisayomi Eko-Davies: Why religion can’t save you (Y! Superblogger)

If we all are of the same race, religion and family, would discrimination cease to exist?

Wouldn’t you love if you could peel off the skin that guides people’s hearts and their thoughts were as clear as writings on paper? I bet you hate how being human makes you incapacitated and all you can see are these opaque heads. Do you ever desire an unguided journey through where the darkest secrets are kept and where the most brilliant of ideas are conceived? What if you are obliged a journey through the mind, would you tell of the absurdities held inside? Would you play God or would you be forced to understand we are all the same, enveloped in the rot that eats us all away? Driven by greed and fierce survival.

Who are we? What makes us us? Who makes the rules on this field? Who decides what is right or wrong? Who amongst us is sane? What is all these madness about religion? If rapture took place now, would any of us be saved? Are we right to judge others by their beliefs?

If we all are of the same race, religion and family, would discrimination cease to exist?

I believe the mind is all there is to us; it should be guided very carefully. It is very comfortable to hide behind the facade of all things shiny and perfect and judge others from the high places where we are seated. I think we should all ask ourselves if truly we understand the message of love and tolerance. Our society is decaying and we are the cause. We shed blood and we hate with no reason. The same beliefs that are meant to save us are the ones making us hold swords against ourselves. Have we ever stopped to ask ourselves what really differentiates us from other animals?

Have we ever wondered about the beauty of the will granted us by God?

We live like we are never going to die. When are we going to see that religion can’t save us? I am one of the lot, I judge my Eckist friends, I think it’s weird to practice Buddhism. My aunt calls her Hausa Muslim neighbour ‘Boko Haram’. I find some sects of Christianity amusing.

Hypocrites , that’s who we are. What is wrong with us all? How did we get here? Can we go back to love?
