Fuel scarcity: Make forex available for oil marketers – NUPENG

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to secure foreign exchange for oil marketers so as to end the current fuel scarcity in the country.

The demand/request was made by the southwest chairman of NUPENG, Tokunbo Korodo, on Wednesday while speaking with newsmen in Lagos.

Korodo noted that Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), as the only importer of petrol into the country, cannot effectively distribute the petrol across the country while stating that oil marketers face difficulty in importing the product because they cannot easily access foreign exchange.

“The only solution to the present scarcity of fuel is for the CBN to assist the oil marketers in accessing forex to commence importation of petrol.”

He said most oil depots in the country rely on the NNPC for distribution of petrol to tanker drivers. This, the NUPENG chairman says, has resulted in gridlock of tankers in private depots.

“NNPC, which at present is the sole importer, cannot distribute nationwide but private depots, through their depots, can do it better. Getting the Forex for oil marketers will go a long way to maintain steady supply.”

He further stated that to eliminate the current fuel scarcity problem in the country, petrol must be supplied regularly. Korodo called on the NNPC and CBN to urgently make foreign exchange available for oil marketers so as to increase the importation of petrol.
