A passenger plane flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf has reportedly crashed in France leaving all 142 passengers and up to eight crew feared dead.

French President Francois Hollande fears that the Airbus A320 which came down in the southern French Alps, may not hold surviving passenger.

Addressing media League Against Cancer headquarters in France, Hollande said it is likely the vast majority of the passengers were German and expressed his “solidarity” with the victims.

According to further reports by the agency, the crash which occurred at about fifteen kilometers from the town of Barcelonnette, was said to have had debris from the airliner which had been found between Digne and Barcelonnette.

The 24 year old aircraft made a distress call at 10.47am then disappeared off radar at around 11.20am, Le Figaro reports.

All emergency personnel are mobilised including a high mountain police squad with a helicopter. “There are peaks at 2800-2900 meters,” he added.

Germanwings tweeted on Tuesday morning it was aware of the reports of a crash but could not confirm any details.
