Globacom and Huawei are about to bring us the fastest Internet Nigeria has seen yet

Globacom
What self respecting media company in Nigeria hasn’t had its fair share of struggles with getting good internet. We are all struggling to siphon our meager quota from a singular stream, sharing IP addresses and suffering massive downtime at the slightest hint of trouble. It is stress we honestly do not need considering how much we pay for data every month. Basic research will tell you our internet woes can be traced directly to one problem, a glaring lack of infrastructure and an unwillingness to invest in infrastructure. Thankfully, at least Globacom has their head in the game and is taking charge in that regard.
Globacom limited, the parent company behind Glo is bringing some major competition Main One’s way (Main One is our major internet infrastructure provider) by bringing a second multibillion Naira Fibre optic submarine cable across the ocean, in a project they are tagging as #Glo2. They recently announced the new project at Eko Hotel, V.I Lagos, and also disclosed they are partnering with Huawei, one of the world’s leading global telecommunications solutions vendors with a huge presence in Nigeria  (you might be more familiar with for their ubiquitous Mi-Fi modems).
Globacom plans to integrate the second 850 Kilometre long submarine cable into their already existing terrestrial network, taking on much of the demand from Abuja and other parts of the country (Lagos and its 21 million inhabitants will just have to manage the Glo1 cable). An extra 12 Terabytes of bandwith per second will greatly help the data bottlenecks that have plagued Glo’s service nationwide and return Glo to the top of the data stakes.
Glo2 complements the Glo 1 international submarine cable built by Globacom in 2010. It is the only international submarine cable in Nigeria managed end to end, from Lagos to London, by one Company and currently provides sufficient bandwidth for the West Africa sub-region.
Time to start weighing that new Netflix subscription.
