The Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Godswill Akpabio has shed some light on the cause of the crisis rocking the Nigerian Governors’ Forum.

In an interview on Sunrise Daily, a breakfast programme on ChannelsTV, Akpabio disclosed that the governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi attempted to run for a second term as chairman of the forum, an act which negates the constitution of the group.

Akpabio said, “The only thing that happened in the governor’s forum is that our chairman, Governor Amaechi attempted to go for a second term, to reinstall himself and we said no.”

“The agreement we had that one (the chairman of the Governor’s forum) should go for only one tenure.”

He explained that the governors had an agreement to rotate the chairmanship of the forum between the north and south of the country with each tenure lasting two years.

“The southern part will do two years and the northern part will do two years for equity,” he said.

He further adds that in trying to push on with the ambition, “a constitution was suddenly produced, which we disputed, we said no….”

The NGF has been engrossed in a somewhat crisis with the creation of the PDP’s Governors Forum which is headed by Akpabio.
