A piece of black cloth hung at the entrance to the Ayede Ekiti community, Oye Local Government, Ekiti State has thrown the residents into panic as the cloth allegedly signifies  a planned attack following the death of a suspected armed robber weeks ago.

According to a resident whose identity was protected, other signs showing thieves were planning to let terror loose on the community have caused them to cry out to security agencies asking for safety against the “anger of these criminals who are making us to live in perpetual fear.”

According to reports, he stated that armed robbery attacks had been frequent in the community before the people organised themselves into vigilante to check their activities.

“The people recently organised themselves into groups of local guards to curb criminal activities in the community. An armed robber was killed and we later found a black cloth hung at the entrance of the community.

“Some elders, who had experienced things like that, said the black cloth was a sign that the armed robbers would attack to revenge the killing of their colleague.”

“The police must beef up security in the town. Apart from the threat from the robbers, we are also being constantly terrorised by herdsmen who claimed that one of their kinsmen got missing in the town, he said.

“Many people who are scared of the threats from the herdsmen no longer go to their farms. Some farms have been destroyed by the herdsmen who grazed their cattle in them.”

According to reports, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Victor Babayemi, said concerned residents had notified the police.

The PPRO said, “We are working with the chiefs, the people and the local government chairman to ensure that the community is safe. We have increased patrol- motorised patrols and foot patrols- in the community and others around it.

“We are also urging the people to be vigilant and alert the police anytime they notice any strange movement or persons. We have to work together to prevent crime, we need information to perform better. But we are assuring the people and those in other parts of the state that the police are on top of the situation and there is no cause for alarm.”
