Gunmen kill legislator in Yobe State

by Stanley Azuakola

There seems to be no end in sight for the gale of killings and bloodshed across the country. The two latest victims are Alhaji Adamu Degubi, the deputy leader of the Yobe State House of Assembly, and Mallam Aliyu Abubakar, a retired officer of the State Security Service (SSS), who were killed separately by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday June 12.

Whereas Degubi was killed in Yobe,Abubakar’s death came in Gombe State.

The late legislator, who represented Nangere Constituency in the house, was elected into the house in 2011 and was made deputy House leader last month following a minor reshuffle in the assembly.

A statement by the Yobe State Police Command public relations officer, Mr Adamu Salihu, confirmed the killing of the legislator.

“We have not ascertained those behind the killing and their motive.

“Investigation is going on to establish those who killed him and why he was killed,” Salihu said.

The death of Mallam Aliyu Abubakar was also confirmed by the authorities. The director of the SSS in the state, Mr Bitrus Asher, said that Abubakar was shot by the gunmen in Yulunguruza Quarters in Gombe at about 6.30 p.m on Monday while he was performing ablution in his friend’s house.

The director said the deceased was shot in the back and was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe where he died.
