13 hours after outbreak, firefighters ‘quench’ Kano market inferno

In the wee hours of Friday, an inferno gutted Gwarzo Market in the Gwarzo Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano state.

As the fire raged on, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed as 30 shops bowed to the inferno.

The fire which began at about 1:45am was put out almost 13 hours later at about 3:21pm.

The entire furniture section of the Gwarzo market was reportedly razed before the fire was quenched by local firefighters.

Mustapha Rulwan, the director of the Kano State Fire Service, has confirmed the incident.

Rulwan revealed that the fire started at around 1:45am and destroyed 30 shops in the furniture section of the market.

“We got the report of the incident at around 1:45am and our men in the Gwarzo office were able to quench the fire at around 3:21pm on Friday.”

“Our preliminary investigation indicated that the fire spread to the shops and other places when some traders attempted to burn sawdust.”
