A bus driver in Lagos has been arrested and charged to court for reckless driving and assault.

Sherafa Adewale, is said to have driven without regard for public safety and when accosted by Afeez Adele, an official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), he proceeded to assault him (Adele).

Adewale was arraigned yesterday before a Magistrate Court in the Lagos Island area after it was alleged that he stripped naked and hit the FRSC commander repeatedly.

The accused, who lives at No. 90, Dagara Street, Lagos Island, is facing a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, SP Austin Orji, said that the accused committed the offences on January 12, 2014, at about 9:00 a.m. at the Ajah Ring-road.

Orji said Adele got a distress call that Adewale was driving recklessly, violating traffic rules and disrespecting the one-way order.

“When he sighted the unmarked vehicle, he stopped him and booked the vehicle for reckless driving and violation of traffic rules.

“As is the duty of a road commander, Adele also charged the accused N30,000 for committing the offences, but Adewale went wild, stripped himself naked and hit the FRSC official severally, before policemen arrived and whisked him away,” Orji said.

He said the offence contravened Sections 170 and 166 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Adewale, however, pled not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, Mrs S.K. Matepo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till February 10,2014 for continuation of hearing.
