Twenty-year-old Judy Watkins visited the Cook County medical examiner’s office on Wednesday to identify the body of her six-month-old daughter Jonylah Watkins, who was shot five times on Monday in the care of her father, 29-year-old Jonathan Watkins. Jonathan is currently at a local hospital recovering from several gunshot wounds he endured during the incident as well.

Facing the hard truth about her baby’s death, Judy Watkins cried silently Wednesday night as she identified the body of her 6-month-old daughter. She viewed the body through a closed circuit television feed at the Cook County medical examiner’s office, according to Rev. Corey Brooks, who is the Watkins family spokesman.

“She stood there for about 30 seconds or a minute,” he said. “But I could tell she would have stayed there all day. I told them that was enough.” Jonylah’s funeral is slated for 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Rev. Brooks’ New Beginnings Church, 6620 S. King Dr. A wake will precede the service at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, Jonathan is cooperating with authorities to help capture the man responsible for murdering his daughter and injuring him. “He is giving them the information that they are asking for,” the family’s spokesman Rev. Corey Brooks said. “If he knew who shot him, trust me, they would be arrested by now.” Watkins was still recovering at a local hospital on Wednesday. A police source said Watkins may have been the victim of retaliation for alleged links to an earlier robbery and shooting.
