Hot baptism: Man arrested for pouring pepper on policeman’s face in Lagos

In a moment of rage, a 35-year-old car washman, James Agbo, has landed in hot water after allegedly pouring pepper on a police officer’s face.

On Wednesday he appeared before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos and was accused of assaulting a policeman while resisting arrest.

Agbo was slammed with a two-count charge of damage and assault as prosecutor, Cpl. Gbenga Salami, told the court how the accused had on March 30 attacked officer, Cpl. Monday Omonghegbe, pouring hot chili on his face.

According to reports, Salami said that Omonghegbe was trying to arrest the defendant for breaking six crates of eggs belonging to one Silifat Lawal.

Agbo however, pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned till April 8.

He said that the accused, who had went to Lawal’s shop to buy beverages, later came back to ask for his mobile phone, which he claimed got missing on his earlier visit.

Salami said that when Lawal told the defendant that she didn’t know where his phone, the accused grabbed six crates of eggs, valued N6,000 and threw them on the road.

According to Salami, the egg crates fell in front of the police officer as he walked on the road.

The prosecutor said that the offences committed at Hogan Bassey Junction, Surulere, Lagos, contravened Sections 172 and 348 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs F.B. Lawal, granted the accused N20,000 bail with a surety in like sum.
