In the wake, of the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to Obafemi Awolowo University, in Ile-Ife, Osun state, several students have been left injured after protests, chaos and fights broke out between undergraduates of the institution.

On Friday, 28 November, the President visited the school alongside Ekiti governor, Ayo Fayose, at the behest of the Committee for Yoruba Unity, which organized the Yoruba Unity Summit, where he was endorsed for re-election in 2015.

Jonathan’s visit met an apparent disapproval from some of the students, most of who came out en masse to protest his presence at the university premises.

While the president was there, several students marched in protest of new school fees announced by some federal universities, and generally, in condemnation of the state of education in the country.

The protesting students reportedly jeered and subsequently stoned Jonathan’s entourage as he was being rushed into a waiting helicopter.

A nasty fight would later break out between some students, after the President’s departure.

While some students blame a difference in ideology as the cause of the fracas, others alleged that things got messy over a disagreement between two student groups over Jonathan’s cash largesse.

While the reasons for the fracas may vary, majority of the students are, however, in agreement that President Jonathan’s visit to the institution prompted the melee.

At last count, no fewer than six students were seriously injured as a result of the confrontation.
