Eyewitness accounts: How Gov. Ortom’s aide was assassinated in Benue state

Eyewitnesses have recounted how Denen Igbana, a senior special assistant on special security to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state, was assassinated along Naka-Ankpa Expressway, Markudi.

According to Leadership, members of the Tionsha Community in Makurdi town have given accounts on how the governor’s aide was killed.

Speaking on behalf of his townsmen, Ijir Thomas Ayakpam, a leader in the community, said: “The gunmen rode on motorcycles, they came in their large numbers and surrounded the area. The residents were deeply asleep because it was about 12.32 am.

“They started shooting as Denen arrived home in his Hilux van, he managed to escaped but they pursued him as you can see the blood in front of the building in the neigbourhood. People were afraid of coming out because the shooting was scaring. But Denen was wailing calling for help as he mentioned the name of a notorious criminal who was recently granted amnesty by the governor. The killers retreated and Denen was quickly conveyed to the hospital where he died.”

On its own part, the Commissioner of Police, Paul Yakadi, said: “Although no arrest has so far being made as to the murder of the SSA but we have commence serious investigation and I bet you, in just few days you and the entire world we hear from us and whatever effort we have made, we shall make it public.”
