“I do not believe in God…” – Seun Kuti

by Isi Esene

Seun, the last son of the Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has been known to say it exactly the way he thinks it is. It is therefore not surprising to hear him utter something a lot of Nigerians will consider blasphemous.

In a recent interview, when asked about the existence of God and what the Supreme Being means to him the artiste refused to acknowledge his existence.

According to him, “I do not believe in God. I am not a believer of anything supernatural. I don’t believe in God, Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Ifa, Ogun, or whatever anybody uses as a reason to explain simple actions of nature,” he said.

When asked about the use of illegal substances, Seun admitted to the use of marijuana saying, “Yes, I do. But I don’t smoke cigarette… I don’t believe any human being has the right to tell nature what to do. Nature believes in the usefulness of marijuana. And I think mankind is pompous. You don’t say earthquake or Tsunami is illegal. So, why should marijuana, an equally natural thing, be illegal, even when earthquakes and Tsunami are killing people.”

What do you think about Seun Kuti’s belief, or more appropriately, unbelief?
