I started singing in 1995 – Stella Damasus refuses to be compared to Tonto Dikeh

by Hauwa Gambo

Poor Stella. Burdened with the singular misfortune of releasing her new single – Love Me Quick – in the same week as actress Tonto Dikeh’s two (as some have called them) music misadventures.

Not knowing her history as a singer, her band (formed in the 90s with her husband, the late Jaiye Aboderin) one of the country’s more famous in the recent past, many assumed she had only joined movie stars who have segued (most, to disastrous effect) into music – including Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Desmond Elliot, Jim Iyke amongst others.

Not exactly a stellar list.

To differentiate herself from the motley cast, she issued this statement through her publicist, Bayo Adetu.

Here it is:

“Those who think I joined the bandwagon of movie stars trying to play music must be new in the industry. They should reminded of the music video “Love Song”, I did with Jaiye (My Late Husband) and the band. I was a studio singer at Klink Studio from 1995.

“That is where I was trained by Sammy Okposo, Zubby Enebeli, Manny Eke, Thelma, Demola Olukotu and the rest. I also started singing in Jazzville before Jaiye (Of Blessed Memory) and I set up our band called Synergy. After he died, I set up Gig Factor.

“Then I did respective duets with Segun Arinze, Mr Cool, back-ups for Sammy Okposo’s album, collaboration with Blakky and OGD All Stars. I have done a lot of songs with Tim Godfrey and Extreme Crew. Three (3) years ago, I did the Christmas songs and videos for AfricaMagic.

“In addition, I have done shows for MTN, Econet, WorldSpace, Keem Bello Osagie, American Embassy, Aisha Babaginda’s first wedding, Peugeot, Leo Stan Eke and Delta State Convention among others.”

Heard.
