A 25-year-old man, Amos Atukpu burglar, has been arrested by policemen from Eleyele Division of the Oyo State Police Command, while returning from an operation.

He was arrested alongside his gang members, Kunle Ola (45) and Baba Abdulahi (32), after two bags suspected to contain stolen items worth N500, 000 were found on them.

Owning up to his crime, Atukpu said: “I am from Benue State but my father lives in Ibadan. I am the only child of my parents and my mother is dead. I left my father some years ago because my father was not satisfying my needs. He is into the business of charcoal sales and was the one who made me drop out of school because anytime I asked him for money he would not give me. Even when I followed him to the farm to burn woods for coal, he would sell my portion with his and would not give me a dime.

“I became frustrated and left home to fend for myself.

“I was once arrested for stealing when I entered a woman’s shop at Eleyele area to steal raw rice. I was charged to court and when no one appeared to stand surety for me, I was remanded in prison. The magistrate later discharged me when the complainant was not coming to court.

“We put heads together and decided it was good for us to rent a room that we could share. We also thought it would take a long time to gather money together if we did odd jobs so we decided to do a bit of stealing,” he disclosed.

While briefing journalists on Friday, the Oyo state police P.R.O, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor said that the gang was intercepted by a patrol team from Eleyele Division at about 4.30a.m on Wednesday, while on a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number MAP 097 QA.

“The suspects have confessed their deeds and have taken detectives to the house of one Dogo Bature at Mokola area but he escaped before police arrival. When Dogo’s house was searched, various stolen items such as keyboard, BlackBerry phones, digital cameras, camcorders, projectors, wrist watches, iPads, Zinox laptops, jewelleries etc. were recovered in his house.”

The PPRO said that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations into their activities had been concluded.
