An assured and calming presence at the back, Jan Vertonghen, strode forward purposefully, exchanged passes with Gareth Bale and what followed, would make Fernando Torres wince.

SuperVan

No, I’m not talking about Robin van Persie, who has been consistently off-colour for the past dozen games. It is the Belgian defender that plays for Tottenham Hotspurs, that impressed last weekend. An assured and calming presence at the back, Jan Vertonghen, strode forward purposefully, exchanged passes with Gareth Bale and what followed, would make Fernando Torres wince. The former Ajax captain killed the return ball expertly and finished past Vorm. Top player. I also like his celebrations. How he tries to rip his shirt off ala comic book superhero, Superman.

Step forward, Gervinho

On the day when the Arsenal faithful celebrated David Rocastle, who in his prime, was a fearsome wideman, it was another winger who stole the show. A lot of Gooners cringed when the Ivorian’s name was included in the starting 11, but in the first 45 minutes, they were singing a different tune. He looked like a player reborn, running dangerously at the hapless Reading defence. A goal and two assists later, as he was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the Emirates crowd rose in unison to applaud an excellent showing.

Gareth of Nazareth

As long as Gareth Bale continues to dazzle every other week, nothing will stop the one-man team cliché from coming up. The Welshman just brings that extra bit of quality that Spurs need. After setting up Vertonghen to put Andre Villas-Boas men in front, Bale received a pass on the edge of the area, shuffled his feet and lifted a glorious effort into Vorm’s top corner. Top drawer stuff, executed with nonchalance and no effort.

Sunk under land

I still don’t understand why club owners are firing managers at the tail end of this season. If Ellis Short wanted to give Martin O’Neill the boot, he would have done that before the Manchester United game. Let’s even face it – Sunderland were not ever going to give United trouble. So it wasn’t about the 1-0 defeat at the weekend. I’m not a fan of Sunderland. They always appear to be a team of hardworkers, with little or no talent. I am not a fan of Paolo Di Canio. I think he’s a poor imitation of Jose Mourinho. It really are dark days at the Stadium of Light.

Rafa, you Blue it again

Everytime I watch a Chelsea match, I leave with the impression that Rafa Benitez is doing his best to ruin the club. Afterall he would not be here next season and arch enemy, Mourinho, is thought to be favourite to replace him. You have to wonder where his priorities lie really. With a wafer-thin squad and an out-of-sorts Torres, there is not much you can do. I would imagine that a top-four finish would be priority. Southampton have become a decent side under , but there is no way they should be defeating a Chelsea side.
