FEMEN strikes again: Topless protesters staged demonstrations near mosques and Tunisian embassies across Europe on Thursday to express support for embattled FEMEN activist Amina Tyler.
“We’re free, we’re naked, it’s our right, it’s our body, it’s our rules, and nobody can use religion, and some other holy things, to abuse women, to oppress them,” FEMEN member Alexandra Shevchenko said in Berlin, according to AFP.
“And we’ll fight against them. And our boobs will be stronger than their stones,” she added.
Tunisian student Amina Tyler sparked a massive controversy in mid-March by posting topless photos of herself on Facebook, with the slogans “Fuck Your Morals” and “My Body Belongs To Me, And Is Not The Source Of Anyone’s Honor,” painted on her body.
Islamist hackers responded with an attack on FEMEN’s Tunisian Facebook Fan Page, replacing topless photos with quotes from the Quran. An Islamic preacher even stated that Tyler could be stoned for her act of defiance.
In support of Tyler’s plight, FEMEN labeled April 4 “International Topless Jihad Day” and organized protests across Europe.
“This day will mark the beginning of a new, genuine Arab Spring, after which true freedom, freedom without mullahs and caliphs, will come to Tunisia! Long live the topless jihad against infidels! Our tits are deadlier than your stones!” the group wrote in a statement on its Facebook page.
Five activists gathered near an Islamic cultural center in Brussels, Belgium, Euronews writes. And according to the Gazetta Del Sud, Italian womenprotested outside the Tunisian consulate in Milan, carrying signs that read “Free Amina” and “Bare Breasts Against Islam.”
The Interfax News agency adds that the protests spread to the Ukraine, with police detaining FEMEN activists in Kiev. “The FEMEN activists drove up to the entrance to the mosque in a car, where they were arrested by the police,” Interfax cites the police reports.
Activists and journalists have expressed concern about Tyler’s well-being in recent days. While her lawyer said the young woman was doing fine, several reports suggest Tyler is being held by her parents in seclusion.
“No, it’s not fine. Amina is with her family but that’s not ‘good news,’ as some newspapers earlier wrote,” journalist Caroline Fourest wrote in a blog for HuffPost France. “No one close to her, none of her friends or people in her support network have seen her or heard that she was free, free to move and speak,” Fourest added.

The reason why they protest is because in muslim communities,they attatch everything to religion and so even if they don’t feel like wearing hijab they will be forced to do so,and so the freedom is not there! I think that the best thing to be done is Islam stop attatching every thing to religion let there be freedom of dressing!
I like when women protest naked, it makes the news more interesting.
@Denton, cases of women that are properly covered getting raped is really rare and rape in its totality is not that common in muslim countries. Men are very physical creatures and the girls that expose too much are kind of like the donkey’s carrot trick to the men.

@ Nasir how is this different from the elder women in the village protesting topless? Or when they have their festivities and walk the town topless? Why so quick to judge them? Have you been to some decent clubs that are crowded, and a girl walks by and a guy smacks her ass? That doesn't mean she asked for it, that doesn't mean she is loose, it means the guy has no respect for women and he has no control or class. Why do we always blame the female. A girl could have been covered up from head to toe and still get raped, is that her fault too? Am not running around town topless, but I applaud these women because at least they are topless for a cause, not for fun. U came into this world naked! Yes God gave us this body and it is a beautiful and fascinating wonder!

They claim their bodies belong to them, that's true, but they themselves belong to GOD and GOD want us all to protect our private parts, that they are not meant for the benefit of the general public but for our spouses alone. I bet you that they themselves are not comfortable with the way they are, they are just pretending. Girls get angry when a guy tells them something like ''hey, I would like to fuck you'' or ''hey bitch, get the fuck down here''. A girl would have to be irresponsible for her to get these kind of comments from guys, if a girl is not wayword, a guy can't walk up to her and slap her ass. So, what I am trying to say in essence is, these girlsa displaying their breasts to the whole world should not expect any form of respect from the general public. They have proven to the whole world that they are public property and so they shal be treated. What sort of liberation entails you to go naked to the public? Something that is left to one's imagination is worth more that what is freely given. May GOD guide them to the right path coz they are surely LOST.
