#InCaseYouMissedIt: Nigerian hackers hit Huffington Post founder’s personal e-mail

Arianna Huffington, Editor-in-Chief of AOL’s Huffington Post Media Group and creator of political website huffingtonpost.com, had her personal e-mail box hacked on 19April, 2012.

“Maureen, it’s true. Our tech department investigated and discovered it was hackers from Nigeria, and no I’m not giving up my AOL email. Arianna,” said the e-mail she wrote to gawker.com’s Maureen Dowd, confirming that her AOL e-mail account had been accessed illegally and then used to send spam e-mail to her contacts.

The scam e-mail read, “I uploaded an important document that i want you to see. Click here to view the document using google docs, just sign in with your email.”

The link contained in the e-mail directed unsuspecting contacts to a website which was then supposed to collect e-mails and passwords, possibly to turn those addresses into spam bots as well.
