On May 26, 2012 the Miami (Florida) police were called to what was supposed to be a fight – where they were greeted with a grisly scene. A naked man (now identified as Rudy Eugene, 31) was seen chewing off the face of another human male, the 65-year-old homeless man, Ronald Poppo. Even when police asked him to desist, Eugene continued, and the officer warning him drew his weapon and fired once.
Eugene reportedly ignored the gunshot and kept on attacking his victim forcing the police officer to shoot to kill.
There are suspicions that Eugene may have been under the influence of drugs (either cocaine or Mephedrone, known on the street as bath salts).
According to Gawker:
Though police had earlier theorised that Eugene’s behaviour could be attributed to “cocaine psychosis,” Fraternal Order of Police President Armando Aguilar has since changed the substance of influence to the stimulant Mephedrone — AKA “bath salts” — citing similar attacks in the area that were carried out by users of the drug.

Not likely that they were tripping together, I don't see these 2 sitting around before-hand sharing drugs. From the above pictures its interesting the victim appears to be wearing 2 shirts and not naked as reported ( which originally gave credit to the story of them using the drugs together. Also it doesn't sound like the officer was in danger or even in the mind of the attacker when he shot him,"Even when police asked him to desist, Eugene continued". I would imagine that a taser would have done a fine job, perhaps a nightstick to the head would have dislodged him. To eat the face of someone on the ground you'd be hunched over exposing the entire back of your body, the picture clearly shows no shots fired there.
The officer shot him once, he kept easting, he then had to shoot him several more times killing him. A tazer would have felt like warm water to that moron.

No one can really answer why. The attacker was naked prior to the incident and after finding his homeless victim, stripped the man naked before proceeding to eat the vast majority of his face. Asking why were they naked seems irrelevant when one could just ask "why did he eat the other guys face?"
