Introducing the YNaija countdown to Aisha Buhari’s public apology… or not!

Today marks a week since we got a hold of the BBC Hausa interview that Aisha Buhari, wife of the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari granted that became the trigger for President Buhari’s seemingly anti-feminist outing. To the outrage of many all over the world, the President has decided to stand by his words while his wife, Aisha, true to form, has remained mum since then. So it seemed very appropriate that we should wade into this matter by helping us all stay on top of events as they unfold in relation this squabble.

Wait! We are assuming you have been on top of things so far. Apologies. Here’s what you may have missed so far:

Last Wednesday, we sort of broke the news of the interview to you. We found snippets of the interview and linked it to our existing suspicions about the scratch my back I scratch yours deals that might be influencing President Buhari’s appointments and decisions generally.

Then on Friday, we finally released the full clip (well, as much as we needed to hear) of the interview. Aisha Buhari, in the interview, not only raised her concerns about the way appointments were being made by the Presidency but also declared that if status quo remained, she will not support her husband if he chooses to run for office again in 2019.

This is where all hell broke loose. First, it was satirist, Elnathan John who attempted to set the first lady right in a Twitter thread admonishing her to take governance lessons in order to understand that Nigeria is “not a family provisions store” where only those she approves of can get government appointments.

We knew already, from precedent that for her, she had spoken her piece and had long moved on. What we did not expect however, was her husband’s reaction which came from far away germany, where he was meeting with the most powerful woman in Europe -German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. He laughed with disdain when asked what he thought of her comments and said she only belongs to his kitchen, living room and #TheOtherRoom.

We never experredit!

Presidential aide, Garba Shehu, tried to dismiss the whole thing as humourous banter but apparently, even he was yet to get the brief – That the battle line had already been drawn. Neither husband nor wife was ready to take back their words.

President Buhari has stood firmly by his words and said that his wife’s function is to take care of him, but we are sure that that is not the end of this.

So sure! So follow us as we chronicle every event that happens in relation to this scandal until Aisha Buhari backs down. Like she plans to LOL!
