Ebola makes a return to Liberia, 15-year-old boy dies

Ebola scare hits Calabar | YNaija.com

In September, Liberians were relieved to learn that the deadly Ebola Virus Disease had been eradicated from their country.

But it appears the jubilation was short-lived.

According to Chief Medical Officer of Liberia, Francis Kateh, a 15 year old boy has died of Ebola in Liberia, the first of such fatality in months.

The boy, “Nathan Gbotoe tested positive last week and died late on Monday in hospital in Paynesville near the capital, where his father and brother are also being treated for Ebola”, officials told Reuters.

Liberia has placed 153 people who may have come in contact with Gbotoe under surveillance while 25 healthcare workers are being monitored.

The source of the virus is being investigated and Liberia has requested the assistance of two experts from the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has twice declared the West African nation to be Ebola-free, once on May 9 and again on September 3.

Until now, Liberia’s last Ebola death was in July.
