Ishola Alolanle Fatai: T.B Joshua, spare me please (Confessions of a Nigerian Atheist)

by Ishola Alolanle Fatai

It’s simple, if I do not believe in God, then how in hell (all puns intended) does it make sense to you that I will believe in ‘sin’ or ‘the devil’?

The church on my street is making noise as usual. I’m irritated as usual. But whatever. That’s all irrelevant, really. I mean, it will always be relevant – at least until The Holy Spirit leads one of the 17 people in there (yes, that’s the number today. I counted) to the grand discovery that they do not, in fact, need to cause a ruckus in the whole neighborhood to praise anyone they feel like. But, again, whatever.

I was scrolling across my Twitter feed in one of those many I-have-nothing-better-to-do moments (even though I actually had/still have a lot to do, of course) when I came across the following tweet.

Now, I don’t know if this is the real TB Joshua account, or if Mr. Joshua uses Twitter at all or is even aware of its existence to begin with. Then again, old TB is supposed to be aware of everything on this earth and beyond, but I digress. If it is him, however, I need him to spare me. Seriously. This isn’t the first time I’m coming across something like this – from people who are not TB Joshua, by the way – and I’m pretty sure it will not be the last, because people simply refuse to think.

It’s simple, if I do not believe in God, then how in hell (all puns intended) does it make sense to you that I will believe in ‘sin’ or ‘the devil’? I would actually like to know because I find it terribly funny and pitiful and frustrating. All I see here is an attempt to frighten people into ‘believing’. To use the same techniques that seem to succeed in reeling so many ‘believers’ in, on us hellbound believers. Which, as I said already, I find sad and frustrating.

If you really want someone to believe in God, let them arrive at that belief themselves. Trying to force or scare them into it is about as fruitless an endeavour as anyone who leads a horse to water discovers, when they realise they cannot make it drink. Especially when they have about as much belief in the things you try to scare them with as a 35-yea-old has in ‘Madam Koi Koi’ or an urban myth of similar ridiculousness.

  2. Well I’m not surprised its just a normal end time sign! And hey believe in God or not it won’t change whom Elshaddai is! But I’m certain judgement is sure for this underestimation of my father in heaven you just did cos you’ve heard the word and you damn God so he’ll show you himself why you should believe in him! I just pray its not too late for you then

  3. Hahahaha! Well no matter. Despite the fact that this is the absolute truth. I still believe in Madam Koi Koi. Hahaha!
