What exactly did Jimi Agbaje do to the Oba of Lagos?

by Kolapo Olapoju

The idiom, ‘water under the bridge’, appears to be alien to His Royal Highness, Oba of Lagos,  Rilwanu Akiolu I.

Even after everything- the Igbo-threatening scandal and gubernatorial elections– the monarch still insists that Jimi Agbaje will never be Governor of Lagos state.

While many thought he meant that it wasn’t yet time for Agbaje to be Governor, Oba Akiolu “still maintains that there’s no going back”. In simple terms, the Pharmacist turned Politician will simply never get the chance.

On Wednesday, at the public policy lecture organised by the Institute of Directors, IoD, the monarch said the following about Agbaje:

“On May 14, 2014 when I first told all residents of Lagos that the next governor of the state will be Ambode, many didn’t believe me.”

“I knew all the waters that have passed under the bridge, including my own blood relations, who without consulting me went with others to say that Bola Tinubu, Fashola and Oba Akiolu have pocketed Lagos, saying that this time, they will not allow that. And I told them that Jimi (Agbaje) will never be the governor. I still maintain it. There is no going back.”

“I have no doubt in my mind, with the cooperation and prayers of everyone, Ambode will perform very well. I told many people that Bola Tinubu planted the seed, Fashola came and watered the seed and it started germinating in geometrical progressions. We have just started.”

The above and all that’s happened between the pair, begs the following questions;

1. What exactly did Jimi Agbaje do to offend his blood relation? Must be serious because we all know “blood is thicker than water” and everything.

2. Is there possibly a family feud lingering between the pair, that the public is not privy to?

3. Why is Oba Akiolu hellbent on Agbaje not governing Lagos, even after he’s had his way with the emergence of Akinwunmi Ambode?

4. When Agbaje made the following statement after his latest defeat: “I tried once before, this is the second one. I’m not running again. If I can’t be of service as governor, there are other ways of serving the state. I will find other ways of serving”, was he passing a message that he’s finally accepted his fate that he can never be governor of Lagos?

5. What if by some miracle Agbaje does a 360 on his decision not to run again, and by some divine intervention, Lagosians decide to vote for him en masse, what will Oba Rilwan Akiolu do?

6. What if Agbaje goes ahead to swallow a big slice of humble pie and hops aboard the Change-wagon of the All Progressives Congress… and the party fields him after Ambode, will Oba Akiolu be able to stop him then?
