Religious tolerance: John Kerry throws in some good words for the Sultan of Sokoto

The U.S. Secretary of State on Tuesday praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar for promoting religious tolerance in the country.

Kerry who is currently on a two-day visit to the country spoke during a courtesy visit on the Sultan at his palace.

He said the United States will corroborate the efforts of the sultanate in strengthening religious tolerance among Nigerians.

Kerry also said the Boko Haram group will only be defeated if the reasons why people join is addressed.

“We also know that beating Boko Haram on the battlefield is only the beginning of what we must do.”

“Building public trust in government also requires cooperation from the military and law enforcement. Extremism can’t be defeated through repression or fear,” he said.

Kerry had a closed door meeting with Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar and some leaders of the two major religions.
